What Happens Here on 29 August, and How to Be a Guest for It

Hurricane Katrina came ashore on the morning of 29 August 2005. Mississippi recorded 238 deaths, 126 of them in Harrison County by early September that year, and the surge destroyed the waterfront of every town along this shore.

Each year the anniversary is marked here. The form varies: wreath-layings, church services, gatherings at memorials, and on the significant anniversaries larger events. The Katrina Memorial on the Town Green in downtown Biloxi, a granite wall carrying the names of coast residents killed in the storm, is the focal point in this city.

If you are visiting that week

Expect the date to be present in a way it is not in July. Expect local news coverage, expect people to talk about it, and expect some services and businesses to mark it in their own way.

A few things make the difference between being a respectful guest and being a problem.

• The commemorations are for residents. You are welcome at public ones. Stand at the back, do not photograph people at a memorial, and do not turn a service into an attraction.
• Let people set the depth. Many here will tell you their Katrina story at length. Others will change the subject. Both are fine and neither needs a follow-up question.
• Do not go looking for ruins. The empty lots in residential East Biloxi are somebody's land and somebody's loss, not a photo opportunity.
• Avoid the word miracle. The rebuild took twenty years, insurance disputes and federal programmes, and describing it as miraculous erases the people who did it.

Where to learn rather than intrude

The Katrina Memorial is public, free and takes ten minutes. The Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum at Point Cadet holds a dedicated hurricane exhibit and is the best explanation on the coast, told by the industry that lived it; the museum itself was destroyed in 2005 and did not reopen until 2014.

Those two places will tell you more than any anniversary event, and they are open the rest of the year.
