For about seven months a year there is a boat to the barrier islands. For the other five there is no public way out there at all.
The single largest seasonal variable on the Mississippi coast is not the weather. It is whether the Ship Island ferry is running.
The passenger service to West Ship Island, operated by an authorised National Park Service concessionaire, sails from Jones Park at the Gulfport small craft harbour, by the junction of US 90 and US 49. Its published season runs roughly from the middle of March to the end of October. Outside those dates there is no scheduled public service to the island.
That matters more than it sounds, because Ship Island is the only place a visitor to this coast sees open Gulf water. The mainland beach fronts the Mississippi Sound, which is shallow, sheltered by the barrier islands and coloured by the rivers that drain into it. The green water in the photographs is twelve miles offshore.
The pattern thins at each end. Spring and autumn generally mean a single daily sailing; high summer usually adds a second. The crossing takes about an hour each way, so even the busiest schedule commits you to most of a day.
Two details catch people out every year. The first is the departure point: the boat does not leave from Biloxi, and allowing twenty minutes for the drive west is the minimum rather than the plan. The second is that weather cancels sailings. A stiff southerly makes the Sound unpleasant and the operator will not run into it.
There is no workaround worth pursuing. Private charters exist but are priced by the boat and are weather-dependent in exactly the same way.
What does work in the closed months is the rest of the coast: the seafood museum at Point Cadet, the Ohr-O'Keefe galleries, the walking path on the Biloxi Bay Bridge, and Davis Bayou in Ocean Springs, which is the mainland unit of the same national seashore and is open all year with trails, a visitor centre and a campground.
